Coffee Machine Grinder Not Working: Jams, Noise and No Grind
A grinder that rattles, stalls, runs without beans or just stops is one of the most common faults on bean-to-cup and all-in-one espresso machines.
What Is Going On?
Integrated grinders work hard. They deal with oily beans, the occasional stone, daily temperature changes and years of use, and eventually something gives. The symptoms vary: a loud noise, a grinder that spins but does not feed, grounds that are uneven, a motor that stalls, or an error message about the grinder.
This page covers grinders built into machines. For standalone grinders, see our coffee grinder repairs page.
Safe Checks to Try First
- Check there are beans in the hopper and that none are stuck against the sides.
- Look for foreign objects in the hopper. If you see a stone, do not poke into the grinder with tools. Switch off and call us.
- Avoid very oily beans, which can clog the grinder and chute.
- Adjust the grind setting only when the machine instructions say to, and typically while the grinder is running on machines that require it.
- Empty the grounds container and tray, as a full container can trigger a fault.
Common Causes and What We Do About Them
Foreign object
A stone or hard fragment can jam or chip the burrs, producing a loud grinding noise.
Worn or damaged burrs
Uneven, coarse or slow grinding, and a need to turn the setting finer and finer.
Motor, capacitor or gearbox fault
The grinder stalls, hums or does not turn. Typical of heavy use.
Blocked chute
Coffee compacts in the chute, and grinding stops or the dose is wrong.
Sensor fault
The machine does not detect the grinder and shows an error.
Grind adjustment mechanism
The setting no longer changes, or changes the grind unpredictably.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
Do not run a grinder that is making metallic or grinding noises. Further use can damage the burrs and motor, and a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.

Coffee Machine Grinder Not Working FAQs
A foreign object, worn burrs or a failing motor are the usual causes. Stop using it and have it checked.
You can clean the hopper and surface. Opening the grinder, or putting anything inside, is best left to a technician.
It depends on use, beans and burr type. A home machine may last for years; a busy business much less.
