Repairs and Servicing for Every Kind of Espresso Machine

Espresso machines are simpler than bean-to-cup machines in some ways and less forgiving in others. There is no brew unit to jam, but pressure, temperature and water quality all matter, and a small fault shows up directly in the cup. Most problems come from a short list: scale, worn gaskets and seals, a tired pump, a solenoid valve that no longer seats, or a failed thermostat, element or control.

We repair manual and semi-automatic machines, volumetric automatics, prosumer machines with E61 groups and commercial group machines. We also look at the grinder that goes with them, because a grinder problem often masquerades as a machine problem. If your machine grinds the beans itself, our bean-to-cup repairs page is the better starting point.

The Espresso Machines We Repair

Manual and lever machines

Simple, mechanical designs where seals, springs, pistons and the boiler are the points of wear.

Semi-automatic machines

The most common home type: you start and stop the shot. Pump, solenoid, gaskets and thermostats are the usual faults.

Automatic (volumetric) machines

Dosing via a flow meter or timer. Flow meter, controls and buttons are checked as well as the usual hydraulics.

Prosumer machines

PID control, E61 groups and plumbed-in options, as on Lelit, Rocket and Gaggia machines.

Commercial machines

One to three group machines for cafés and restaurants, from brands such as Rancilio. Priority breakdown attention.

Thermoblock and thermocoil machines

Compact home machines, including Sage and Breville models, with fast heat-up and different scale behaviour.

Single Boiler, Dual Boiler or Heat Exchanger: Why It Matters for Repairs

The boiler design tells us where to look first. A single-boiler machine, such as a Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia or Lelit Anna, brews and steams from the same boiler, so a thermostat or element fault affects everything. A dual-boiler machine, such as a Lelit Bianca or Rocket R Cinquantotto, has two heating circuits and usually a PID, so there is more to test but also more stability. A heat-exchanger machine, such as a Rocket Appartamento, Giotto or Lelit Mara X, brews through a heat exchanger in the steam boiler, which is why you flush before pulling a shot after it has sat idle.

E61 machines use the thermosiphon group head found in many prosumer and commercial machines. The group is robust, but its gasket, shower screen and valve seals wear, and a leaking E61 is one of the cheapest repairs to do and one of the most worthwhile. If your machine is plumbed in, mention it when you book, as it influences how we approach the work.

Espresso Machine Faults We Repair

Low pressure or runny shots

Pump wear, a stuck over-pressure valve or scale. Read why espresso machines lose pressure.

Leaks from the group or underneath

Group gaskets, seals, hoses and fittings. See leaking machines.

Cold, hot or unstable shots

Thermostat, element, PID or boiler pressure. See heating problems.

Weak or no steam

Blocked tips, scaled steam circuits or valve faults. See frothing problems.

Solenoid and drain problems

A wet puck or water dripping from the drain tube points to the three-way valve.

Machine will not start

Fuses, switches, control boards or a tripped thermal cut-out. See machine not working.

Home Espresso Machines and Commercial Espresso Machines

For home espresso machines, we repair and service on-site where it makes sense and in our workshop for more involved jobs. A home machine in daily use benefits from yearly servicing, and descaling frequency should reflect your water.

For commercial espresso machines, speed matters. Tell us how many groups are affected and what is still working. Our commercial repairs page covers business response and servicing plans. Many cafés and restaurants also need their grinders attended to at the same time, and that is covered by our coffee grinder repairs page.

Espresso Machine Repair FAQs

It depends on the machine and the fault, so we diagnose first and give you a written quote before any work starts. Routine jobs such as group gaskets and shower screens are modest; electronics and boilers cost more. If a repair is not worthwhile, we will say so.

Yes. Home and prosumer machines are covered on this page, and cafés and restaurants can also rely on us. Commercial breakdowns are prioritised; see commercial coffee machine repairs.

For a home machine in daily use, once a year is a sensible rule, more often if your water is hard or you run a borehole. Commercial machines need more regular visits. See coffee machine servicing.

Often yes, since many espresso machines are built around common components. The model and voltage matter, so send us the details and we will tell you what is possible before you bring it in.

Sometimes. A single inexpensive part on a good machine is worth fixing; a large bill on a very cheap machine usually is not. Our diagnostic is designed to tell you which situation you are in.
