Coffee Machine Not Heating: Why Coffee Comes Out Cold
Lukewarm coffee, a heating light that never goes out, or steam that has gone weak: the fault is almost always scale, a failed sensor or a worn heating element.
What Is Going On?
A coffee machine heats water in a boiler, thermoblock or thermocoil. If the water does not reach temperature, the coffee is flat, bitter or weak, and the machine may refuse to make steam at all. The cause is usually in one of three places: the heater itself, the sensor that tells the machine the temperature, or a restriction that stops water reaching the heater properly.
Before assuming the worst, note whether the problem affects only coffee, only steam, or both, and whether it came on suddenly or over weeks. Gradual decline suggests scale. Sudden loss suggests an electrical fault.
Safe Checks to Try First
- Warm the cup first and check the temperature or heat setting on the machine.
- Run the descaling programme if one is overdue, using the right product for your machine.
- Check the water tank is seated and that water is flowing normally. A restricted flow can overheat and trip a safety cut-out. See water-flow faults.
- On espresso machines, check whether the machine is simply taking longer to warm up, and consider how long it has been on.
- Note any messages or lights, and tell us exactly what they were.
Common Causes and What We Do About Them
Scale on the heater
Limescale insulates the element or thermoblock and chokes the water path, so heat transfer drops and recovery slows.
Failed heating element
The element has burned out. Common on older and hard-working machines.
Faulty temperature sensor or thermostat
The machine reads the wrong temperature, so it stops heating early or never starts.
Safety cut-out or fuse
A thermal fuse blows to protect the machine, often after overheating from low water flow.
Control board or relay fault
The board does not switch the heater on. More common on machines with electronic control.
Steam-specific faults
A blocked steam tip or valve. See milk frothing problems.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
If the machine heats but then trips the breaker, smells of burning or is making unusual noises, switch it off and unplug it. Do not keep running a machine that may be overheating.

Coffee Machine Not Heating FAQs
Scale on the heater, a faulty sensor or a failed element are the usual causes. A descale is the first step if one is overdue.
Sometimes, when scale is the only cause. If the heater, sensor or board has failed, a descale will not help, and we can diagnose which applies.
Not necessarily. Steam problems are often blockages or valve faults rather than a heater fault.
