Coffee Machine Not Frothing Milk: Causes and Fixes
Flat milk, spitting steam or an automatic frother that produces only hot liquid usually points to a blockage, scale or a worn valve, and many of these are quick to fix.
What Is Going On?
There are three kinds of milk system. A steam wand needs steam pressure and a clear tip. An automatic frother (as on many bean-to-cup machines) draws milk and air through tubes and a valve. A jug system, such as the one on a Philips LatteGo, relies on a clean jug and air path. Each has its own fault pattern.
Milk residue is the number one cause across the board, so clean thoroughly before suspecting a fault. If cleaning does not help, it is time to look at the machine itself.
Safe Checks to Try First
- Purge the steam wand and wipe it after every use. Milk dries and blocks the tip.
- Remove the steam tip and check the holes. With the machine off and cool, clear them with a pin.
- Run the milk system cleaning programme, and take apart removable parts to check the tubes and valves.
- Use cold, fresh milk. Some alternative milks froth poorly in some systems.
- Run a descale if overdue. Scale restricts steam and blocks air intake.
Common Causes and What We Do About Them
Blocked steam tip
The tip holes clog with dried milk, so steam flow is weak or spits.
Scale in the steam path
Scale restricts steam and affects pressure. Descaling is the first step.
Blocked or worn milk tubes
Tubes harden or clog and no longer draw milk and air.
Valve or air-intake fault
A worn valve or blocked air intake means milk heats but does not foam.
Low steam pressure
The boiler or pump is not delivering enough steam. See not heating.
Sensor or control fault
On automatic machines, a fault that prevents the milk function from running.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
Never block or force a steam wand while the machine is hot. Hot steam and milk can scald, so let the machine cool before clearing anything.

Yes. Fresh, cold full-cream milk froths best in most machines; alternatives vary and some perform poorly.
