Gaggia Repairs

Gaggia Coffee Machine Repairs in Cape Town

Gaggia makes two very different kinds of machine, and we repair both: the manual Classic espresso machine that many enthusiasts start on, and the automatic bean-to-cup models such as the Anima and Cadorna.

Professional Gaggia Coffee Machine Repairs

The Gaggia Classic and Classic Pro are single-boiler machines with a 58 mm portafilter, a vibration pump and a three-way solenoid valve. They are simple and robust, but they do wear in predictable places: the solenoid, the group gasket and shower screen, the thermostats and the pump. Replacing those parts properly usually brings the machine back to full strength, which is why we would rather repair than see them scrapped.

Gaggia's automatics, including the Anima, Brera, Cadorna, Velasca and Babila, work like other bean-to-cup machines, with a grinder, removable brew unit and, on most, an integrated milk system. For those the usual suspects are the brew unit, grinder and milk circuit. If you are not sure which type you have, see our espresso machine repairs and bean-to-cup repair pages.

Gaggia Faults We See Most

Weak pump or low pressure

A worn vibration pump or an over-pressure valve that has stuck. Thin, fast shots are the giveaway. See low pressure faults.

Soggy puck, water won't drain

The three-way solenoid valve is blocked or failing, so pressure is not released from the group after the shot.

Leaking around the group head

A hardened group gasket or worn shower screen. A routine replacement that is easy to put off.

Cold or inconsistent shots

Thermostat faults or scale in the boiler, which also slows steam recovery.

Steam wand weak or blocked

Milk residue in the tip or scale in the steam path. Related reading: milk not frothing.

Anima / Brera brew unit and grinder faults

Jams, error lights and uneven grinding on the automatic models, usually fixed with a clean and replacement of worn parts.

Classic vs Automatic: What We Check

On a Classic, the first job is to measure brew pressure and check the over-pressure valve, because most complaints about weak or sour espresso trace back to pressure or temperature. We inspect the group seal, shower screen and solenoid at the same time, since they wear together.

On an Anima, Brera or Cadorna, we start with the brew unit and grinder, then the water circuit and milk system. These machines forgive routine cleaning but not neglect, and a service often resolves faults that look more serious than they are. Larger prosumer upgrades, such as plumbing a Classic into a water line, are something to discuss with us before you start.

Keeping a Gaggia Running Well

Back-flush the group on a Classic regularly with a suitable cleaner (check your model first, as not every Gaggia group suits it), wipe the shower screen and keep the steam wand purged. Descale the boiler on a schedule based on your water, and tell us if you are on borehole or tank water, as that changes the advice.

On the automatics, empty the grounds and drip tray, rinse the milk circuit after every use and use the descaling programme when the machine asks for it. A yearly service is sensible for machines in daily use.

It can be, but check the grind and dose first. If a finer grind makes no difference, the pump or the over-pressure valve is the next suspect, and we can measure it.
