Coffee Machine Low Pressure: Why Espresso Runs Thin and Fast
Shots that run through in 10 seconds, thin or absent crema, a gauge that will not climb: low pressure has several causes, and some of them are not the machine at all.
What Is Going On?
Espresso is made at roughly nine bar of pressure. When pressure is too low, water slips through the puck, extraction is uneven and the shot is thin, sour and pale. The problem is common, and the fix depends on whether the cause is the grind, the dose, the pump or a leak in the system.
We start by separating technique from hardware. If a fresh, correctly ground dose still runs fast, we measure the actual brew pressure, rather than trusting the gauge, because gauges themselves can be faulty.
Safe Checks to Try First
- Grind finer, check the dose and tamp evenly. A coarse grind is the number one cause.
- Use fresh beans. Stale beans produce thin shots whatever the machine does.
- Check the water tank is full and seated, and that the shower screen and basket are clean.
- Run a descale if one is due, as scale restricts the water path.
- On pressurised baskets, check that the basket is the right one for the machine.
Common Causes and What We Do About Them
Worn pump
A vibration pump loses strength with age, particularly in machines run on scaled water.
Over-pressure valve set low or sticking
The valve that limits pressure can stick open or drift, giving low pressure.
Leak in the system
Water escaping at a gasket or fitting means less pressure at the puck.
Scale in the water path
A restricted path reduces flow and leads to erratic pressure.
Worn group seals or shower screen
Water bypasses the puck, and the result is a thin, fast shot.
Faulty gauge
The gauge reads wrongly, so the machine is fine but the reading is not. We measure to find out.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
Do not adjust a pressure valve unless you know what you are doing. Over-pressurising a machine can cause leaks or damage, and fixing that costs more than the original problem.

Coffee Machine Low Pressure FAQs
About nine bar at the group during extraction is the usual target. Many machines can pump higher until the over-pressure valve limits it.
Yes. A worn grinder produces uneven particles and a puck that offers little resistance, so the shot looks like a pressure fault.
It may be the gauge. We can measure the real pressure and tell you.
