Coffee Machine Not Working? What to Check and When to Call

No lights, no display, a machine that switches itself off or trips the plug: a coffee machine that will not start is usually a small part, not a dead machine. Here is what to check, and what we do about it.

What Is Going On?

When people say a coffee machine is not working, they mean one of a few things: nothing happens at all, it starts and then stops, it powers up but refuses to brew, or it trips the electrics. This page covers the first group, machines that will not start or will not stay on. If the machine is on and running but the coffee is the problem, go to machine not making coffee.

Most start-up faults come down to power, safety switches or the control board. All three are fixable, and in most cases it is much cheaper than replacing the machine.

Safe Checks to Try First

  • Try a different wall socket and a different appliance in the original one, to rule out the socket.
  • Check the plug fuse and the lead for damage, and do not use a lead that is hot, scorched or cracked.
  • Check that the water tank, drip tray and grounds container are fully seated. Many machines refuse to start if a sensor does not detect them.
  • On a bean-to-cup machine, make sure the service door and brew unit are properly closed. On a capsule machine, make sure the lever is fully down.
  • If the power only just came back after an outage, switch off at the wall for a few minutes and try again.

Common Causes and What We Do About Them

Power or surge damage

Outages and surges, load-shedding included, can damage the control board or its power supply. A fault like this often means a board repair.

Blown thermal fuse or tripped cut-out

Safety devices cut the power when a machine overheats, often because of scale or a blocked water path. The cause needs fixing, not just the fuse.

Faulty switch or sensor

A worn power switch, or a microswitch that no longer detects the tank, tray or door.

Damaged mains lead or internal wiring

Intermittent power and a machine that works only when the lead is moved. Not something to repair at home.

Control board fault

A machine that lights up but freezes, restarts or stays on a start-up screen.

Water inside the electronics

A leak onto the board. Unplug and keep the machine dry. See leaking machines.

When to Stop and Call a Technician

If a machine trips your circuit breaker, smells of burning, is hot to the touch while off or has any visible damage to the lead, unplug it and leave it. Do not open the case: mains voltage and stored heat are dangerous.

Coffee Machine Not Working FAQs

Often yes. A dead machine is frequently a fuse, switch or board fault rather than a total failure. We diagnose first and tell you honestly if it is not worth it.

Usually an internal fault, a damaged element or water inside the machine. Unplug it and have it checked. Do not keep resetting the breaker.

Power cuts and the surge when supply returns can stress the electronics. Unplugging sensitive appliances, or using surge protection, is sensible.
