Coffee Machine Error Codes and Warning Lights Explained
An error code is the machine telling you where it thinks the problem is. The code is rarely the whole story, but it narrows things down fast, and we use it that way.
What Is Going On?
Codes and messages differ by brand and often by model, so there is no universal list that is worth trusting. What does hold across brands is the type of fault a message points to. Most fall into a handful of categories: maintenance prompts (descale, clean, empty), water (tank, flow, filter), brew unit or grounds, grinder, heating or temperature, and electronics.
If you phone us with the exact message, the model number and when it appears, we can usually say what is likely before we have seen the machine.
Safe Checks to Try First
- Write down the exact message or the pattern of the lights, and the model number from the rating plate.
- Note when it appears: at start-up, during grinding, during brewing, or after cleaning.
- Switch the machine off at the wall for a few minutes and try again, in case it is a one-off.
- Follow the on-screen prompt if it is a maintenance message, such as emptying the tray or refilling water.
- Do not repeatedly restart a machine that shows a heating or pump message.
Common Causes and What We Do About Them
Descale and clean prompts
Maintenance messages that will not clear, even after the cycle. Often a sensor or an incomplete cycle.
Water and flow messages
Tank, filter or flow-meter issues. See not pumping water.
Brew unit and grounds
The brew unit has not seated or reset. See not making coffee.
Grinder messages
A fault with the grinder or its sensor. See grinder faults.
Heating and temperature
The machine is not reaching, or cannot read, the temperature. See not heating.
Electronics or communication faults
Messages that return after a reset, or a machine that locks up.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
If a message appears together with a burning smell, visible leaks or a tripped breaker, switch off, unplug and call us rather than trying to clear it.
