Coffee Machine Not Making Coffee: Causes and Fixes
The machine powers up, runs and even grinds, but nothing useful comes out: no coffee, only water, or a weak brew. The fault sits somewhere between the beans and the cup.
What Is Going On?
This is different from a machine that will not start (see machine not working). Here the machine is alive, but the brew fails. What is going wrong depends on the type: on a bean-to-cup machine, the grinder, chute or brew unit; on an espresso machine, the grind, pump or group; on a capsule machine, the piercing mechanism or water path.
Think about what changed. A new bag of beans, a different grind setting, a missed cleaning cycle or a descale that was interrupted often explain it, and several of these you can fix yourself.
Safe Checks to Try First
- Check there are beans in the hopper and that they are not oily and clumped.
- On bean-to-cup machines, look for a blocked coffee chute and check the grounds container is correctly placed.
- On espresso machines, check the grind is not too fine and the basket is not overfilled.
- On capsule machines, check you are using the right capsule type and that it pierces or locks correctly.
- Check water flow: see not pumping water.
Common Causes and What We Do About Them
Grinder not feeding
The grinder runs but no beans reach the brew path, or the grind is so fine the water cannot pass. See grinder faults.
Blocked chute or brew unit
Damp grounds clog the chute or jam the brew unit, so brewing stops or produces only water.
Weak pump
Water moves but pressure is too low. See low pressure.
Scale or blocked outlet
The outlet or nozzle is blocked, so little comes out.
Sensor or flow meter fault
The machine miscounts water and cuts the brew short.
Capsule or piercing fault
On pod machines, a capsule that does not pierce or lock.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
If a machine overflows, makes grinding or crunching noises, or leaks as well as failing to brew, stop using it. Continuing can damage the brew unit or the grinder.

Coffee Machine Not Making Coffee FAQs
The grinder may not be feeding, the chute may be blocked, or the brew unit may not be closing. A diagnostic will identify which.
Beans, grind, dose, or a pump or water-flow fault. Rule out the simple things first, then call us if it persists.
If a descale is overdue, do that first. If the fault remains afterwards, it is likely a part that needs replacing.
