Coffee Machine Not Pumping Water: Water-Flow Problems
A pump that hums but delivers nothing, a trickle where there should be a stream, or a machine that says the tank is empty when it is full: these are water-flow faults, and they have a short list of causes.
What Is Going On?
Every coffee machine relies on water moving from the tank, through a pump, into a heater and out through the brew path. If any link is restricted or failing, you see slow flow, no flow, a noisy pump or a message about water. Because the same symptoms can come from several causes, a diagnostic that tests each stage in turn saves money.
This page covers no flow and poor flow. If water is flowing but in the wrong place, see leaking machines; if the machine is making coffee but weak, see low pressure.
Safe Checks to Try First
- Check the water tank is seated properly and the tank valve moves freely.
- Fill the tank and remove it, then refit it firmly. An air lock can stop the pump priming.
- If you have a water filter cartridge, remove it and try again. A new cartridge can trap air and a spent one can restrict flow.
- Run the descaling programme if one is due, since scale is the single most common cause of slow flow.
- Listen to the pump. Running but silent on water means priming or a blockage; a harsh or stuttering sound means wear.
Common Causes and What We Do About Them
Scale blockage
Deposits narrow the water path through the heater and pipework, reducing flow and raising pressure.
Air lock
Air in the line stops the pump from priming, especially after a tank runs dry.
Worn pump
The pump no longer builds pressure. Often accompanied by noise and weak, thin coffee.
Blocked valve, outlet or brew path
Coffee residue or scale blocks an outlet, nozzle, or the brew unit.
Flow meter or sensor fault
On automatic machines, a flow meter that reads wrongly makes the machine think there is no water.
Tank valve fault
A stuck valve or float cuts off the supply from the tank.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
Never run a pump dry for long. If the pump is running without moving water, switch the machine off, since a dry pump and a heater without flow can both be damaged.

Coffee Machine Not Pumping Water FAQs
A stuck tank float or valve, a faulty sensor or air in the line. Try reseating the tank first. If it persists, it needs a diagnostic.
Signs include noise, weak or intermittent flow, and a pump that runs but delivers little. Scale can look the same, so we test both.
Often, if scale is the cause. If a descale makes no difference, the pump or a blockage is the next thing to test.
